Shelby school employee saves student’s life, earns state award

SHELBY — Odey Ramirez, a Shelby Public Schools family advocate employee, recently received state commendation for her swift actions that saved a student’s life. Ramirez was called into a classroom at Thomas Read Elementary School, March 5, to assist a student.  As she entered the classroom, she noticed a different child had just begun to choke on an apple and that the teacher needed assistance.  Ramirez immediately began the Heimlich maneuver on the choking child.  Eventually, the apple piece was dislodged from the student’s throat. “Throughout the event, Odey remained professional, calm, and composed,” said Shelby Public Schools Superintendent Dan Bauer. “She was extremely quick to respond and did everything in her power to assist the struggling child.  Thankfully, she was available and her actions saved a child’s life.” Ramirez was recognized, April 15, for her role in helping that child by State Rep. Jon Bumstead (R-Newaygo).  She was presented a tribute for her actions signed by Bumstead, Sen. Goeff Hansen (R-Hart), and Governor Rick Snyder, offering thanks and gratitude for…
