SHELBY — Juvenile culprits involved in two separate vandalism cases have been caught, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.
A 15-year-old Shelby girl and a 16-year-old Shelby boy allegedly spray painted graffiti on 18 school buses at Shelby Public Schools and vandalized nearby Getty Park, said Sheriff Mast. “She’s an absolute hell on wheels,” he said of the female suspect.
Two 13-year-old Shelby boys allegedly smashed the glass of a brand-new basketball backboard at Shelby Township Park, he said.
Petitions for all four juveniles are being requested in Oceana County Probate Court seeking charges of malicious destruction of property over $1,000. They have all been turned over to the custody of their parents. Restitution is being requested in both cases, said the sheriff. The damage amount to the school buses alone is over $1,800, he said.
“During this investigation, our Shelby School Resource Officer Tim Simon played a part where he was able to obtain some security surveillance footage,” said Mast.
Juvenile suspects are rarely detained unless it is an “extremely serious” matter, said the sheriff. There has been a decriminalization movement in the juvenile court system in general, and juvenile detention centers across the board lack space and staff to house and oversee young offenders, he said. “They’re being adjudicated the best they can with the system we have in place now.”
