Grease fire damages home

ROTHBURY — A grease fire damaged a double-wide trailer at 2725 Forrest St. Saturday, Nov. 4, shortly after 11 a.m., according to Grant Township Fire Chief Dan Yost.

“The person who lives there had cooked French fries in grease on the stove, and he went to the store and had forgotten that he had left (the stove burner) on. Then, he came back and found that the house was full of smoke and fire.”

Firefighters’ quick actions resulted in containing the fire within five minutes of their arrival. The kitchen suffered fire damage, and the rest of the home sustained smoke damage, said Yost.

Shelby-Benona Fire Department assisted, and Montague Fire Department was dispatched, but was told to disregard the call shortly thereafter.

No smoke detectors were activated in the home, said the chief. This was also the case at a fire in Grant Township just days earlier.

It was not immediately known if the home in Saturday’s fire is insured.  No one was injured in the blaze, and no pets were inside the home.

It has not been yet determined if the home can be salvaged.
