Space heater may be cause of trailer fire

By Allison Scarbrough, Editor

GRANT TOWNSHIP — A single-wide trailer is a total loss after fire ripped through it Tuesday night, Oct. 31, during a rare Halloween snowstorm.

A space heater may have caused the fire at 7110 Clearwater Court, said Grant Township Fire Chief Dan Yost.

The southwest portion of Oceana County was hit by a snowstorm Tuesday that kept Grant Township firefighters extremely busy. In addition to the fire, the department responded to 13 weather-related calls, including two vehicle crashes and 11 calls of downed power lines, trees and branches.

The single-wide trailer was not insured, said Yost, and the American Red Cross has been contacted to assist the two adults who lived there.

Firefighters from Grant Township, Shelby-Benona and Ferry Township responded to the scene at approximately 10 p.m. “It was heavily involved when we arrived,” said Yost.

“No one was home at the time. A couple of animals were in the residence, but it sounds like a neighbor opened the door and the animals ran out. Both of the home owners were at work.

“It is presumed that it was a space heater,” said the chief of the cause of the fire.

Life EMS and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office assisted. The scene was cleared after about two hours. “We had the fire contained probably within 20 minutes.”
