Firefighters burn house for training exercise

By Allison Scarbrough, Editor

GRANT TOWNSHIP — Just one night after fighting a “real structure fire”, local firefighters fine tuned their life saving skills the next night with a training exercise of fighting a staged house fire.

“We did a live fire training last night,” said Grant Township Fire Chief Dan Yost. Firefighters from Grant Township, Shelby-Benona and Pentwater participated in the training exercise which involved burning a large two-story house located at the corner of Yale Road and Oceana Drive in New Era, Nov. 1.

“We did live fire evolutions with our department, Shelby and Pentwater.”

The house is owned by Burnette Foods, the canning, processing and shipping plant located just down the road. “They’re putting in their expansion project down there. Their plan was to tear it down, and we asked them if we could do training on it instead of tearing it down, because we don’t get to train on structures very often. We get invaluable experience to be able to do it in a controlled environment.”

The firefighters also captured some impressive photos of the flaming structure.
