HART — A 34-year-old Rothbury man was sentenced to 17 months to five years in prison in Oceana County’s 51st Circuit Court Monday, Oct. 26, for a conviction of third-degree criminal sexual conduct (CSC).

Vermeulen

Sean Raymond Vermeulen, who also faces child sex crime charges in Mason County, pleaded guilty to the charge Aug. 10, according to court records.

The two victims, who are sisters, were ages 17 and 18 at the time of the offense, said Oceana County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Bizon.

“Normally, as the age of consent is 16, this would not have been illegal,” said Prosecutor Bizon. “Vermeulen was (a relative) by marriage, making this not a legal option.

“Vermuelen used his position to take advantage of their youthful vulnerabilities. Both victims wanted this outcome where the defendant was sentenced on a felony, but adamantly did not want to go to court unless absolutely necessary. I am hopeful this outcome allows for some closure.”

Vermeulen is charged with two felony counts of child sexually abusive activity in Mason County’s 51st Circuit Court. He is scheduled to appear in court for a final trial conference in that case, Nov. 10, at 11:40 a.m.

Judge Susan K. Sniegowski gave Vermeulen credit for one day served in jail and also ordered $666 in fines and costs. He is registered on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry.
