SHELBY — The Shelby High School Marching Band recently earned a 1 rating at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) Marching Festival at Big Rapids High School.

“At this event they performed their show, ‘Give Us Space!’ for a panel of adjudicators where they received an overall Division 1 rating,” said Shelby Band Director Erin Ray-Peterson. “This event is so amazing because you get to watch all of the bands in our MSBOA District and enjoy their shows and hard work. We thank Big Rapids for hosting such a fun and educational event.

“Our Shelby bands have had a busy couple of months to start the school year,” said Ray-Peterson. “From middle school band, all the way to our high school band, the students have been working hard. Our high school band students just performed at their last home game on Friday Oct. 23, where they were joined with the seventh and eighth grade cadet band for a piece. With over 150 band members on the field, the students performed together for their community. It was bittersweet watching our seniors have their last evening out in the night lights, as we’ve had a fun and successful season.”

The band students suited up again for the annual Glow Show at Montague High School, Oct. 19. “Our Band Boosters provided lots of glow sticks and accessories, and some sections brought some extra lights for a beautiful show. With the lights off, they performed their show in the dark for a gorgeous display of color alongside Hesperia, Montague, Whitehall and Mona Shores.

“We may have concluded our evening outdoor performances, but we have another big performance coming up on Nov. 7 titled SPECTACULAR! This performance will start with our Shelby Jazz Band and some local desserts in the cafeteria. We’ll then take the festivities into the auditorium for a huge indoor marching show, complete with lights and section features. You won’t want to miss it. Tickets can be purchased at the door or from a student the week before the event.

“As much as I’ll miss marching season, I am excited to buckle down for concert season with our amazing students. We thank the community for your continued support.”
