City of Hart voters to consider public safety millage Nov. 3

October 22, 2026

HART – City of Hart voters will consider a proposed 2-mill public safety millage during the Nov. 3 general election. The proposal would authorize an additional property tax levy for four years, beginning in 2027 and continuing through 2030.

“The city has not requested a millage increase since 2002,” states a press release from the City of Hart. “Over the past 24 years, the costs of providing municipal services, including personnel, equipment, vehicles, and infrastructure, have continued to rise.

“The city currently faces an estimated $285,000 general fund budget shortfall. If approved and levied at the full rate, the proposed millage is expected to generate approximately $129,596 in its first year, helping offset public safety expenses supported by the general fund.

“For property owners, the proposed millage would cost approximately $100 annually for every $50,000 in taxable value, or $8.33 per month. Taxable value is generally different from a property’s market value.

“Even if approved, the millage would not fully eliminate the city’s projected general fund shortfall, and additional budget considerations would remain necessary.

“Residents are encouraged to review the ballot language and learn more about the proposal before voting on Nov. 3.” Additional information is available here.
