In Loving Memory of Lucus Jerry Werkema-Grondsma
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lucus Jerry Werkema-Grondsma, 18, a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. Lucas died on Sunday, September 27, 2026. He was born on April 22, 2008.
Though only 18 years old, Lucus lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and genuine connection. He had a fearless spirit and was never afraid to take on a challenge or pursue the things he loved like fishing, hunting and target practice.
Lucus possessed an old soul. He carried a compassion and understanding beyond his years that drew people to him. He had a kind heart, a charming smile, and a wonderful sense of humor that could brighten even the darkest days. He never met a stranger and had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel like a friend. He left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.
Most of all, they will remember the love he shared so freely. Lucus was loved beyond measure by his family and friends, and the memories he created with them will be treasured forever.
While our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched. His time with us was far too short, but the impact of his life will endure for generations.
Lucus leaves behind a family who adored him and friends who became family. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. Forever our Lucus.
Lucus is survived by: mothers, Melissa Grondsma and Shelly Werkema; stepmom, Jill Kodde; siblings, William Werkema-Grondsma and Emma Werkema-Grondsma; stepsisters, Lacey (Jordan) Cooper and Kenzie Kollar; girlfriend, Kyla Brown; great-grandmother, Judy Lauber; grandparents, John and Barb Grondsma and Jerry and Mary Werkema; aunts and uncles, Dora Grondsma, Philip (Amy) Grondsma, Robert Baker, Ethane Lambson, Meagan (Kelly) Mankoski, Barbie (Jeffrey) Lotz, Alden Grondsma, Rodney Grondsma, William (Eng) Werkema, Jennifer (Kevin) Jackson, Tracy (Shannon) Werkema, and Mike Jackson; cousins, Mackenzie (Lynn) Wagner, John Grondsma, Wyatt Grondsma, Iris Lotz, Waylon Grondsma, Alex Lopez-Grondsma, Anna (Isabell) Lemster, Owen (Kenzie) Jackson, Alivia Jackson, Elli Jackson, Trinity Werkema, and Travis Werkema.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon, Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, King-Hart Chapel, 2370 N. 72nd Ave, Hart with a celebration of Lucus’s life being held from 1 to 2 p.m., where the family is encouraging family and friends to share their favorite memories of Lucus. Following services, the family will host a luncheon at the Eldon L. Chadwick VFW Post 6017, 8440 N. U.S. 31 (business), Pentwater. Please dress in casual attire, as that is what Lucus would have wanted.
