Richard Gregwer
Richard Collins Gregwer, of Pentwater, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026, at age 76.
He was born on Jan. 16, 1950, to Collins and Grace (Gebhardt) Gregwer in Hart.
After graduating from Pentwater High School, Richard was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country in Vietnam. During his service, he was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. Richard was always proud of his military service and remained a strong supporter of veterans throughout his life.
Following his military service, Richard dedicated 32 years to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office in corrections. Service was deeply woven into the Gregwer family. His father served as an undersheriff, and Richard was proud to see both of his children continue that legacy: his son, David, as a sheriff’s deputy, and his daughter, Stacy, who served her country in the United States Army.
Richard married Verna (Hood) in 1998, and together they shared 28 wonderful years. Through the years, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and memories.
Richard found joy in the simple things in life. He loved motorcycles, fishing, camping, card games, westerns, and spending time with his friends and family. He had a special fondness for John Wayne and the Upper Peninsula, where he enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors and the time spent there. He was known for being a loving and kind man, and the people who knew him will remember his friendship and the many memories they shared with him, including his lifelong friend Bruce Maynard.
Richard’s faith was an important part of his life. Having accepted Jesus into his heart, he held firmly to his faith for many decades. His family finds comfort knowing he walked his narrow road with faith and has now found his way home.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Verna; his children, David Gregwer and Stacy Gregwer; his sister, Rosemary Gregwer; and his nieces, Chevon Heaton, Colleen Janos, and Christy Gregwer.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles Gregwer; his sister, Ruth Ann Gregwer; and his niece, Joanna, who was very dear to him.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His love of country, dedication to service, devotion to his family, and deep faith will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Allied Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1209 Krafft Rd, Port Huron on Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Richard’s name to The American Cancer Society.
