FERRY TOWNSHIP — A house fire at 2241 E. Ferry St. resulted in a family of five being displaced from their home Monday evening, Aug. 17.

Thanks to the firefighters’ quick response, the home is salvageable, said Capt. Chris Ernst of the Ferry Township Fire Department. Unfortunately, the single-family home was not insured.

It appears that a candle started the fire in a back bedroom of the house, said Ernst. Firefighters from Ferry Township, Shelby-Benona and Hesperia were able to contain the blaze to that room, but the rest of the house sustained smoke damage.

The family is staying with relatives, said Capt. Ernst, and the American Red Cross has been called in to help.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 8:38 p.m. and cleared the scene at 10:23 p.m. The family evacuated the residence upon discovering the fire, and no one was injured.

“We had a good attack on it, and we were able to contain it to the room of origin,” said Ernst. “We had a quick response and got it taken care of pretty quick.”
