GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office responded to five separate injury crashes at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in less than a week.
One of the crashes resulted in a “spinal and leg injury” for a 65-year-old Crystal, Mich. man Saturday, July 25, shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to an OCSO traffic crash report.
The man was southbound in a 2024 Can-Am Maverick “when he crested a dune at a high rate of speed,” states the report. “As he went over the dune, he lost control of his vehicle, which overturned, landing on its wheels.” The man was transported by Life EMS to Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital. His passenger, a 13-year-old Mason, Mich. girl, was also transported by Life EMS to Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital for a head laceration.
A 44-year-old Mount Morris, Mich. woman operating a 2005 Honda TRX450 was transported by Life EMS to Trinity Health Shelby Hospital following a crash Tuesday, July 21, around 2:40 p.m., according to the report.
She “was operating southbound on the Silver Lake Sand Dunes when she lost control of her ORV, which overturned.” The woman “fell from the vehicle and sustained possible back, leg, neck, and arm injuries.”
Another crash on the dunes occurred Thursday, June 23, around 2:40 p.m. A 59-year-old Newaygo woman was operating a 2021 Yamaha YXZ that “was traveling south in the dunes; lost control; and overturned, injuring the passenger,” the report states. A 16-year-old Newaygo girl was injured, but refused treatment.
A 62-year-old Romulus, Mich. man operating a 2024 Can-Am Maverick “was southbound on the Silver Lake Sand Dunes when he crested a sand dune at a high rate of speed,” states the report. As he went over the dune, he lost control of the vehicle, which overturned. He sustained a head laceration and self-transported to Trinity Health Shelby Hospital’s emergency room, according to the report. The accident occurred Saturday, July 25, shortly before 4 p.m.
A 35-year-old Hopkins, Mich. man operating a 2021 Kawasaki KRF 100 was southbound on the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Friday, July 24, around 4 p.m. He “crested a dune at a high rate of speed,” and “when he went over the dune, he lost control of the vehicle, which overturned and landed back on its wheels.” The passenger, who is a 36-year-old Hopkins woman, sustained “a minor scalp laceration, but refused medical transport.”
