SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Mason County — A 43-year-old Shelby man died after reportedly diving into a swimming pool in the 4800 block of West Birch Lane Tuesday afternoon, July 14, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.
“On Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at 4:20 PM, emergency crews responded to the 4800 block of West Birch Lane in Mason County’s Summit Township for a reported male subject unresponsive in a swimming pool,” states Sheriff Cole in a press release.
“Family reported the male had jumped into the pool, headfirst, and did not come back to the surface. Family members and Riverton Fire Department (personnel) removed the person from the pool, and lifesaving efforts began immediately. Despite those efforts, the male was pronounced dead at Corewell Health Hospital in Ludington.
“The victim is being identified as a 43-year-old Shelby man,” said Sheriff Cole. “Riverton Fire, Life EMS, and the Mason County Victim’s Services Unit all assisted deputies at the scene.
“The case will remain under investigation pending a cause of death by WMED.”
