Pentwater District Library
PENTWATER TOWNSHIP — Pentwater Township voters will decide Aug. 4 whether to approve a new four-year operating millage that would provide funding for Pentwater District Library services through 2029.
The proposal asks voters to authorize the library to levy up to 1.25 mills, or $1.25 for every $1,000 of taxable value, on all taxable property within the Pentwater District Library district. If approved, the millage would be levied annually for four years, from 2026 through 2029, to provide funding for all district library purposes authorized by law. The levy would generate approximately $465,000 during its first year in 2026.
The request follows the library’s transition from the Pentwater Township Library to the Pentwater District Library, an independent district library established under Michigan’s District Library Establishment Act. While the library provides contracted services to residents of Weare Township, those residents are not part of the district and are not eligible to vote on the proposal. Only Pentwater Township residents, including those who live within the Village of Pentwater, are eligible to vote on the millage.
The current library building at 402 E. Park St. opened in 1996. Construction was funded through a combination of a federal Library Services and Construction Act grant and more than $200,000 in private donations, without seeking a library millage from voters. More than $300,000 has been invested in capital improvements since 2017, including technology upgrades, renovations and accessibility improvements.
Under Michigan law, a portion of the revenue generated by the proposed millage could be subject to capture by the Oceana County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority. The proposal will appear on the Tuesday, Aug. 4, primary election ballot. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
