ROTHBURY — As tens of thousands festival goers descend upon the Double JJ Resort for the Electric Forest Festival this week, Muskegon County Emergency Management issued a traffic advisory for US 31 and I 96.
The advisory states the following:
Please be advised of potential regional traffic impacts related to the Electric Forest Festival, taking place June 25–28 in Rothbury, just north of the Muskegon County line,” states MCEM. “The event is expected to draw approximately 50,000 attendees and 10,000 staff, significantly increasing traffic volume in the surrounding area.
- Today (Thursday, June 25): Increased westbound traffic on I 96 to northbound US 31
- Sunday/Monday (June 28 and 29): Increased southbound US 31 to eastbound I 96 traffic as attendees depart.
Congestion may be further compounded by ongoing construction and driver fatigue or impairment. Please plan accordingly and exercise heightened caution.
Michigan State Police issued a similar advisory Monday:
The Electric Forest Festival kicks off this week, and a significant increase in traffic is expected on northbound US 31 beginning Tuesday night (June 23).
Starting around 11 p.m. Tuesday and continuing through Thursday, motorists should expect heavy traffic volumes and possible delays on northbound US 31 between the Winston Road exit and the Stony Lake Road/M 20 exit, specifically between mile markers 136 and 140.
Local residents and travelers are encouraged to:
- Plan for additional travel time.
- Consider alternate routes when possible.
- Remain patient and alert in heavy traffic conditions.
- Avoid distracted driving and maintain a safe following distance.
Traffic congestion and backups are expected as festival attendees arrive throughout the week. Michigan State Police troopers will be monitoring traffic and assisting with public safety efforts in the area.
Please drive safely and help us make it a safe week for everyone traveling to and from the festival.
