WEARE TOWNSHIP — Candidates for the National Asparagus Festival queen title recently received a lesson about asparagus during a tour of the West Michigan Research Station.
Under the guidance of Justin Adams, the women learned about the local asparagus industry; what growing conditions make a good crop; how imported asparagus is affecting the US asparagus industry; and the various types of research taking place in Oceana County to make the industry better for asparagus farmers.
The queen candidates also had the opportunity to pick asparagus on an asparagus picker.
The candidates will meet with the judging panel June 12, when the 2026 National Asparagus Queen and Runner-Up will be selected.
The 2026 National Asparagus Queen will be announced and crowned live during the NAF Friday Night Kick-Off concert Friday, June 12, featuring the band Your Generation at the Oceana County Fairgrounds in Hart.
Queen candidates include: Shannon Beishuizen, Katelyn Brown, Makynzie Curtis, Jennifer Ramirez Coppedge and Sami Weesies.
