MANTON — The Hart girls varsity track and field team placed sixth out of 15 schools Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Region 22 Finals in Manton.
Hart had two regional champions, as Shelbie Choponis won the discus title and Joselyn Flores captured the high jump championship. Both athletes qualified for the MHSAA state finals.
Addison Hain also advanced to the state finals in two events, placing seventh in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash.
The Pirates qualified two relay teams for the state finals. The 4×100-meter relay team of Flores, Ellie Gross, Hain and Natalie Rosema finished third, while the 4×800-meter relay team of Alaina Schaner, Emma Miller, Martina Saenz and Rosema placed fourth.
Additional scoring performances for Hart included Rosema taking third in the 800-meter run, Gross placing eighth in the 300-meter hurdles, Choponis finishing eighth in the shot put, Lauren Hopkins earning sixth in the pole vault, and the 4×400-meter relay team of Hain, Flores, Gross and Rosema placing fourth.
Hart coach Calvin Ackley congratulated the team on its performance and wished the state qualifiers good luck the remainder of the season.
