BRETHREN — The Pentwater Falcons closed out the track and field season Friday at the Division 4 Regional Meet in Brethren with a strong showing that included two state qualifiers, 18 place finishes, 30 medals and seven personal records.

While the regional meet marked the end of the season for many Falcons athletes, Pentwater coach Erika Fatura said the meet also reflected the growth and resilience the team displayed throughout the spring.

“This team has battled through challenges, celebrated successes, supported one another through disappointments, and grown together all season long,” Fatura said. “More than the medals and personal bests, this group has been filled with athletes who genuinely care about each other and represent Pentwater the right way.”

Senior Logan Fatura qualified for the Division 4 State Finals by winning the discus with a throw of 131 feet, 10 inches and placing second in the shot put at 41-4.

Sophomore Chase McGuire-Vangills also advanced to the state finals after winning the 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 44.05 seconds. McGuire-Vangills also placed fourth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 18-7½, finished fourth in the 110 hurdles in 18.70 seconds and took eighth in the 200 dash.

The state finals will be held May 30 in Hudsonville.

Pentwater’s seniors were recognized following their final regional competition.

Lauren Davis capped her Falcons career with fourth-place finishes in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles and helped the 4×100 relay team place third. Coach Fatura credited Davis for her leadership and consistency throughout her career.

Michelle Smith contributed to a sixth-place finish in the 4×800 relay and an eighth-place finish in the 4×400 relay. One of the highlights of the day came when Smith handed off to her younger sister, Valerie, during the 4×400 relay.

Jacobo Martin competed in the high jump and 200 dash while stepping into a larger role during the closing stretch of the season.

Other top performances for Pentwater included Tyler Zimmer placing third in the pole vault at 8-6 and fifth in the 300 hurdles with a personal-best time of 49.02 seconds.

The 4×100 relay team of Davis, Karina Olivarez, Lexi Smith and Lila Merrill placed third in 56.84 seconds.

Lexi Smith added a fourth-place finish in the high jump, while Bailey Case finished fifth in both the 1,600 run and 3,200 run.

Lila Merrill placed fifth in the 200 dash with a personal-best time of 29.84 seconds.

The 4×800 relay team of Bailey Case, Valerie Smith, Maggie Jorissen and Michelle Smith placed sixth, while the 4×200 relay team of Merrill, Emma Werkema-Grondsma, Lexi Smith and Khloe Vangunst also finished sixth.

Additional personal-best performances came from Anthony Acosta in the long jump, Emma Werkema-Grondsma in the 100 hurdles and Valerie Smith in the 400 dash.
