PENTWATER — An 87-year-old Pentwater man was ticketed for careless driving and transported by ambulance to Trinity Health Lakeshore Hospital in Shelby Tuesday, May 12, after crashing a 2005 Toyota Camry into a marina office building on Hancock Street around 1 p.m.

The accident caused “significant damage” to the building and another storefront, said Pentwater Police Chief Laude Hartrum.

The vehicle traveled down the sidewalk on South Hancock Street; crossed over Sixth Street; and hit the Snug Harbor Marina office building, said the police chief. “It took out a wall and the front door.” As the vehicle traveled down the sidewalk, it hit a garbage can that “flew into one of the storefronts—a yoga shop—and took out the glass.” Flower pots were also destroyed in the crash.

No one else was injured even though there were people inside the buildings when the crash occurred. “We’re very lucky and fortunate no one else was injured,” said Chief Hartrum. They were able to move out of the way and avoid being hit.

“The vehicle was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed,” he said.

A monetary damage amount was not immediately available.

The man will be required to undergo a driver’s reexamination through the Michigan Secretary of State, said the chief.
