SHELBY — Shelby dropped a nonconference girls soccer match to Muskegon Catholic Central 4-2 on a windy night Tuesday, but the Tigers continued to battle until the final whistle.
MCC struck early after capitalizing on an unfortunate bounce outside the box and carried the momentum throughout the first half. Despite Shelby limiting many offensive opportunities, the Crusaders converted their chances efficiently to build a 3-0 halftime lead. An early second-half goal extended the deficit to 4-0.
The Tigers refused to back down.
Shelby controlled much of the second-half possession in the Crusader zone and generated multiple scoring opportunities before finally breaking through with about 10 minutes remaining. Kylee Hanson delivered a cross that Nicole Ortiz finished to put Shelby on the board.
With about three minutes left, Hanson blasted a shot from the top of the box to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Tigers could not complete the comeback.
Brylee Friedman recorded seven saves in goal for Shelby.
“Games against physical opponents like this will continue to push us to grow as we head toward districts in a few weeks,” Shelby coach Joseph Gorton said. “We continue to learn and push to get better, and the lessons from this contest won’t be wasted.”
Shelby fell to 7-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in conference play. The Tigers travel to league powerhouse North Muskegon on Wednesday night.
