HART — The Oceana County Council on Aging welcomed guests the Friday before Mother’s Day, May 8, to a free charming Ladies Tea celebrating the Victorian floral tradition of “tussie mussies.”

Led by Program Director Bradley Youngstrom, the event highlighted the history and symbolism behind tussie mussies — small Victorian bouquets carefully arranged to communicate sentiments through flowers.

Drawing from his professional floral expertise, Youngstrom guided guests through the meanings associated with traditional flowers and demonstrated how these petite arrangements were once used to express admiration, gratitude, affection and friendship.

In addition to the presentation, guests enjoyed traditional English tea service accompanied by an assortment of cookies, pastries, and sweet treats. Guests also won door prizes, including bouquets, a teapot lamp, and a quilted bag made by OCCOA Program Assistant Mary Fuce.

“This is the third tea I’ve planned and by far my favorite theme,” said Youngstrom. “Tussie mussies remind us that flowers can communicate heartfelt emotions in thoughtful and lasting ways.”
