VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College’s operating millage renewal proposal appears headed for passage following the release of unofficial election results from Manistee County Tuesday night.

The proposal maintains the current rate of 0.9604 mills, generating approximately $4.1 million annually over a 10-year period. These funds have historically supported facility maintenance, program equipment, and capital improvements that directly benefit students and the community.

The college’s district includes all of Mason and Manistee counties and portions of Oceana, Lake and Newaygo counties.

In Mason County, voters approved the proposal by a margin of 2,246 to 1,686, or about 57 percent to 43 percent. In Manistee County, the proposal passed 1,859 to 1,664, or about 53 percent to 47 percent. Oceana County (Crystal, Elbridge, Weare, and Colfax townships) voters defeated the request with 77 yes versus 139 no. Lake County also defeated the proposal with 54 yes versus 100 no. In Newaygo County, 9 voted yes and 33 voted no.

Combined unofficial totals from the two counties show the measure passing 4,245 to 3,622.

“On behalf of the board of trustees and staff, the college is grateful for the continued commitment and confidence shown by our communities through the renewal of this capital millage,” said WSCC President Scott Ward. “This investment is not simply in buildings and infrastructure, it is an investment in opportunity, workforce development, and the long-term strength of our region. The support allows the College to continue providing high quality educational experiences, modern learning environments, and community focused facilities that serve students, employers, and residents throughout our district.”

The 2026 capital millage renews the college’s existing rate, first approved by voters in 1996, with no increase.

The proposal required approval from voters living within the college district, which includes Mason and Manistee counties along with portions of Lake, Oceana and Newaygo counties.

Results will still need to be approved by each county’s board of canvassers, most likely late next week.
