West Shore Community College, in partnership with local school districts across Oceana County, has received state approval to launch the Oceana County Early Middle College program beginning in fall 2026. The program will provide students opportunities to earn college credits and career credentials while completing high school.

The program is a collaboration between West Shore Community College and Oceana County high schools, including Hart, Pentwater, Shelby and Walkerville. The institutions aim to provide a transition from high school to college and careers.

The Early Middle College model is designed to be individualized, allowing students to pursue academic and career pathways aligned with their goals. Credential attainment is a central component of the program, with an emphasis on marketable skills.

Students enrolled in the program will remain registered at their home high school while taking college-level courses through West Shore Community College. There are no out-of-pocket expenses for students or their families.

“The program is designed to support students through a blend of academic and career-focused experiences,” said Sara Cornell, early middle college coordinator. “Students participate in weekly skill-building sessions that strengthen academic and professional development, along with monthly workshops that enhance college and career readiness,” Cornell said. “They also engage in community service and career exploration opportunities, including job shadowing and potential internships.”

Students apply during their 10th-grade year, with the program beginning in 11th grade. Upon completion, participants will graduate with a high school diploma, an early middle college certificate and up to 60 college credits or industry-recognized credentials.

“This program represents an investment in the future of Oceana County students,” said Michael Masters, dean of occupational programs. “By removing financial barriers and creating pathways to postsecondary success, we are empowering students to achieve their goals and strengthen the local workforce.”
