SCOTTVILLE — Pentwater’s track and field program turned vision into reality — and backed it up with results — at the inaugural Falcon Flash Invitational held Friday at Mason County Central’s Spartan Community Field.
The Falcons delivered across the board, totaling 31 places, 53 medals and 13 personal bests. Every Pentwater athlete earned at least one medal, and both the boys and girls teams finished third. The boys squad missed second place by just two points.
The meet itself marked a milestone for the program, created despite Pentwater not having a home facility. With support from Mason County Central, volunteers and community members, the event came together as both a competition and a celebration.
“It’s easy to make excuses when you don’t have a facility, but much harder, and far more meaningful, to create opportunities anyway,” Pentwater Coach Erika Fatura said, who also credited coach Gabriel Wise for helping bring the invitational to life.
Fatura also honored seniors Lauren Davis, Michelle Smith and Logan Fatura for their contributions. In an emotional moment, the team recognized Ben Jorissen, who recently received news that he is cancer-free and was present to support the Falcons.
On the track and in the field, Pentwater produced multiple event winners.
Logan Fatura led the way with victories in shot put (39 feet, 9 inches) and discus (138-8), while Chase McGuire-Vangills won the 100-meter dash in a personal-best 11.89 seconds and added a 200-meter title in 24.67. The girls 4×200 relay team of Lauren Davis, Emma Werkema-Grondsma, Lexi Smith and Karina Olivarez also claimed first in 2:03.10.
Second-place finishes included Tyler Zimmer in pole vault (9-6, personal best) and the 400 (1:03.91), along with multiple runner-up efforts from McGuire-Vangills in the hurdles. Distance runner Bailey Case placed second in both the 1,600 and 3,200, and Pentwater added strong relay finishes in the 4×100 and 4×800.
Third-place efforts came from Fatura in the 100, Lexi Smith in high jump, Valerie Smith in the 400 and Lauren Davis in the 300 hurdles. Pentwater also placed in the 4×100 throws relay and the 4×400 relay.
Additional highlights included several fourth- and fifth-place finishes and a number of personal bests, including marks from Tyler Zimmer in long jump, Anthony Acosta in long jump, Emma Werkema-Grondsma in long jump and hurdles, and Maggie Jorissen in the 800.
In total, the Falcons’ performance reflected both depth and development, with contributions throughout the roster.
Beyond the results, the invitational underscored the strength of the Pentwater community. Dozens of volunteers contributed to the event’s success, helping create what organizers described as more than just a meet.
“This was more than a track meet,” Fatura said. “It was a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community rallies around its kids.”
For Pentwater, the inaugural Falcon Flash Invitational established both a new tradition and a statement — one rooted in resilience, community support and competitive success.
