MONTAGUE — Montague used big innings in both games Thursday to sweep Shelby in a West Michigan Conference Rivers Division varsity baseball doubleheader, winning 8-4 and 11-1.
In the opener, Shelby built a 3-0 lead before Montague answered with a decisive fourth inning, scoring five runs to take control. The Wildcats added insurance late to secure the 8-4 win.
Evan Waller led Montague at the plate with two hits and three RBIs. Chase Simon and Leighton Belasco each had two hits, with Belasco driving in a run. Eli Kelley took the loss on the mound for Shelby.
In the nightcap, Montague again broke the game open in the fourth inning. Holding a 3-0 lead, the Wildcats scored five runs in the frame and went on to an 11-1 victory.
Trevor Weiss paced the Montague offense with two hits and an RBI. Cam Smith was charged with the loss for Shelby.
Shelby, coached by Brian Wright, is now 16-5 overall.
