SHELBY – The Tigers hosted Holland Black River on Thursday, falling 2-0 to the River Rats.
Despite the loss, Shelby showed improvement in the second half, according to coach Joe Gorton.
Black River entered the match with the highest Michigan Power Rating of any opponent on Shelby’s schedule this season. The Tigers created scoring opportunities, including a shot by Annie Stark that hit the post.
Gorton said his team responded well against a strong opponent.
“We were able to play good soccer, fighting tooth and nail against a quality opponent,” he said.
“I’m very proud of the way our girls battled for 80 minutes after a very long week,” Gorton added. “Battles like these will be difference makers as we move toward the postseason.”
The loss moves Shelby to 6-2-2 overall. The Tigers are scheduled to host Ludington on Monday.
