SHELBY — Shelby and Fremont battled to a scoreless draw Monday in a girls soccer matchup defined by defense and heavy winds.
Gusts blowing endline to endline disrupted play throughout, contributing to a back-and-forth contest where each team controlled possession in stretches of five to 10 minutes. Neither side could break through as both defenses and goalkeepers held firm.
Shelby’s back line delivered a standout performance, consistently slowing, deflecting, or stopping Fremont’s attacks before they reached the net. Goalkeeper Brylee Freidman turned in her strongest outing of the season, recording 14 saves and helping dictate the tempo.
Fremont’s forwards generated sustained pressure, but Shelby’s midfield worked to regain possession and transition the ball forward. The Tigers created a pair of late chances in the final three minutes, with Annie Stark hitting the side post and Charlee Friedman narrowly missing on a long volley.
Shelby matched Fremont’s physical play and intensity throughout against a traditionally strong conference opponent.
The Tigers, coached by Joseph Gorton, move to 5-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.
