SHELBY — Shelby dominated Kent City from the opening whistle Friday, scoring eight first-half goals to end the match early in a mercy-rule victory.
Playing their third game of the week, the Tigers wasted no time asserting control. Annie Stark opened the scoring just two minutes in off an assist from Michelle Peterson. Three minutes later, Kylie Brown delivered a left-footed cross on a feed from Charlee Friedman to make it 2-0.
Brown then set up Stark for her second goal, pushing the lead to 3-0. Olivia Rogers followed with a finish on a through ball from Brixtyn Friedman. Kylee Hanson, celebrating her birthday, added another goal off a second assist from Brixtyn Friedman.
Defender Ari Garza, playing up on the wing, made it 6-0 after finishing a cross from Erin Cruz. Lydia Soelberg scored on a setup from Fernanda Espinosa around the eight-minute mark, and Brixtyn Friedman capped the scoring with her first goal of the season with 15 seconds remaining in the half.
The game ended at halftime with Shelby ahead 8-0.
“The girls played very well after a long week,” coach Joseph Gorton said. “I was most impressed by their unselfishness and their willingness to contribute in different ways as we mixed up the lineup. Their excitement for their teammates was contagious, and that camaraderie is a key component to our early season success.”
The win improves Shelby to 5-1-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Tigers return to action next week with three more games scheduled.
