MARION — Pentwater opened West Michigan D League Conference action in impressive fashion Tuesday at the first conference jamboree, turning in a strong showing in the field events despite incomplete results due to a timing system failure.
“We had a beautiful evening and the Falcons showed up strong, especially in the field events,” Pentwater coach Erika Fatura said. “Even with limited results, there is plenty to celebrate.”
Official times were unavailable for most running events beyond the girls 100-meter dash and 100 hurdles, with full results expected to be released later.
Highlighting the meet for Pentwater was senior Logan Fatura, who set a new school record in the discus with a throw of 144 feet, 1 inch. The mark surpassed his previous record of 134-4 set at last year’s state finals. Fatura also won the shot put at 43-6.5.
The Falcons’ discus group produced multiple personal bests, with Rodney Grondsma, Xach Davis and Silas Jobbins all turning in top efforts.
Tyler Zimmer added another key performance, placing fifth in the pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 8-6. He is closing in on the school record of 10 feet, set in 1962.
Chase McGuire-Vangills led Pentwater in multiple events, finishing second in the long jump at 18-5, third in the 300 hurdles in 44.9 and sixth in the 100 dash in 12.19, with personal bests in the long jump and hurdles.
Lexi Smith placed fourth in the high jump at 4-6.
Pentwater also saw a number of fifth-place finishes, including Zimmer in the pole vault, Lauren Davis in the 100 hurdles (19.9), Bailey Case in the 1,600 run (6:32.9), and the 4×100 relay team of Davis, Case, Maggie Jorissen and Emma Werkema-Grondsma (1:03.77).
Werkema-Grondsma added a sixth-place finish in the long jump (12-10) with a personal best.
The Falcons recorded 10 personal bests overall, including efforts from Anthony Acosta (discus 57-0), Xach Davis (shot put 24-4, discus 73-0), Rodney Grondsma (discus 65-7), Silas Jobbins (shot put 24-4.5, discus 56-7), Zimmer (400 dash 1:02.36), Logan Fatura (200 dash 26.0), Lila Merrill (100 dash 14.94), Jorissen (800 run 3:55.4) and Werkema-Grondsma (200 dash 32.7).
