Varsity Girls Soccer: Shelby rebounds with 5-0 win over Manistee

MANISTEE — The Shelby varsity girls soccer team bounced back from a tough road loss Monday with a commanding 5-0 win over conference foe Manistee.

Playing in improved weather conditions, the Tigers controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting the Mariners 42-3.

“We were aiming to rebound, and the girls responded well,” said Shelby coach Joseph Gorton. “They played with great spacing, kept their heads up, and shared the ball.”

Shelby opened the scoring early when Annie Stark finished a through ball from Charlee Friedman. Moments later, a cross from Kylie Brown was redirected off a defender to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Zoe Cornaby, celebrating her birthday, made it 3-0 with a one-timer over the goalkeeper off a Brown assist.

Despite continued pressure and several scoring chances, Shelby led 3-0 at halftime.

The Tigers maintained control in the second half but did not score again until midway through the period. Brown recorded her second assist on a corner kick that was finished by freshman Nicole Ortiz. Michelle Peterson capped the scoring, converting a pass from Kylee Hanson.

Manistee managed just one shot on goal, which was saved by Shelby goalkeeper Brylee Friedman.

The win improves Shelby’s record to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Tigers are scheduled to host Kent City on Friday.
