HART — The Hart Pirates returned to action Friday night with a 5-0 win over the Lakeview Wildcats in their first game of the week after weather cancellations.
Hart controlled play early, using an aggressive high press to keep Lakeview under pressure. The Pirates forced multiple turnovers and created several scoring chances but were unable to convert. Shots struck the crossbar, stalled in muddy conditions and a penalty kick was saved as the Wildcats held firm.
Lakeview began to settle in midway through the first half but also struggled to finish. The Wildcats hit the crossbar, while Hart sophomore Marissa Moul preserved the shutout with two goal-line clearances.
The Pirates broke through with about four minutes remaining in the half. Sophomore Addison Barefoot initiated a counterattack, sending junior Natalie Rosema down the left side. Rosema outran the defense and scored at the near post to give Hart a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Hart extended its lead quickly after the break. Just over three minutes into the second half, junior Zoily Sarabia chipped a pass to the back post, where freshman Kennley Riddell finished for her first varsity goal, making it 2-0.
Seconds later, Rosema forced a turnover and the Pirates capitalized again. Viviana VanAgtmael combined with Barefoot on a give-and-go, and Barefoot finished to push the lead to 3-0.
Hart added another goal midway through the half when VanAgtmael intercepted a goal kick and chipped a pass over the defense. Sarabia controlled it and fired into the upper corner for a 4-0 advantage.
The Pirates closed scoring in the final five minutes. Rosema’s shot was saved, but sophomore Nereyda Rosas collected the rebound and set up Sarabia for her second goal of the night. It marked Rosas’ first varsity point.
Hart goalkeeper Baleigh Klotz made several saves and showed improvement in coming off her line to claim crosses and through balls.
The Pirates host Whitehall in a conference match Monday at 5:45 p.m. The junior varsity team returns to action at 4 p.m. at home against Fremont.
