SCOTTVILLE — Pentwater and Shelby turned in strong performances Friday at the Scottville Optimist Track & Field Invitational at Mason County Central’s Spartan Community Field, highlighted by multiple event wins and top finishes against a field that also included Mason County Central and Mason County Eastern.
While host Mason County Central ultimately swept both the boys and girls team titles, Pentwater showed early-season strength with 26 medals and 14 personal records, continuing to build momentum across both the boys and girls programs.
Pentwater’s Lauren Davis led the way, winning the girls 200-meter dash in 30.59 seconds and helping the Falcons capture the 4×100 relay (1:00.12) alongside Karina Olivarez, Lexi Smith and Emma Werkema-Grondsma. Davis also added a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles and a fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles.
Logan Fatura and Chase McGuire-Vangills paced the Pentwater boys. Fatura placed second in the discus (121-3) and third in the shot put (35-6), while McGuire-Vangills finished second in the 200 (24.62) and added third-place finishes in both the 100 (11.92) and long jump (17-3.25), all personal-best efforts.
The Falcons also found success in the relays, placing second in the boys 4×100 (54.21) and girls 4×200 (2:10.37), while adding several additional top-six finishes across sprinting, distance and field events.
Shelby also delivered a strong showing, led by Isaac Garcia, who swept the boys sprints with wins in the 100 (11.72) and 200 (24.37). Teammate Elijah Dashiell added a victory in the 400 (56.79), while Parker Weirich placed second in both the 1,600 (5:20.35) and 3,200 (11:28.28).
On the girls side, Shelby’s Noel Parker won the 400 (1:13.73) and 1,600 (6:22.98), and Kathryn Beyer added a win in the 800 (2:53.47). The Tigers also claimed the girls 4×800 relay (11:55.39) and saw strong finishes in the field events, including a runner-up effort from Peyton Rapes in the shot put.
Mason County Central controlled the team standings, winning the boys meet with 192 points, followed by Mason County Eastern (146), Shelby (104) and Pentwater (48). The Spartans also claimed the girls title behind dominant performances in the hurdles, relays and field events.
MCC’s Jackson Poll swept the boys hurdles, while the Spartans captured three boys relays. On the girls side, Maylan Sanders swept the hurdles and Faith Hawke won both the shot put and discus to lead the Spartans.
Mason County Eastern also turned in notable performances, including a distance sweep by Lance Niedzielski in the boys 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
The meet marked the return of the Scottville Optimist Invitational, bringing together area programs for an early-season test across a full slate of running and field events.
