Shelby Jazz Band earns top rating at state festival

SHELBY — The Shelby Jazz Band, which includes Shelby middle and high school students, achieved an overall division 1 rating at the Michigan School Bands and Orchestra Association’s State Jazz Festival, March 25, at Mona Shores High School.

Bands are rated on a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being the highest rating possible.

“Our students had fun preparing and selecting the repertoire which included, ‘In A Mellow Tone,’ ‘Round Midnight,’ and ‘Such Sweet Thunder,’” said Director of Shelby Bands Erin Ray-Peterson. “Our jazz students received an overall division 1 rating for their preparation, a clinic, and feedback on how to improve ensemble playing. Go Tigers!”

Students Joselyn Calixto, Juan Ramirez, Mason Bromley, Cael Omness, Michael Neino and Adelide Fleming rehearsed and performed at MSBOA District 1 Honors Band at White Cloud High School. They performed with guest director Ted Malt, director of bands at West Shore Community College.
