SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A 52-year-old New Era man died after he was ejected from the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer he was driving following a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning, March 28, on northbound US 31 near 66th Avenue, according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.
Robert Charles Veld was pronounced dead at the scene following the 5:28 a.m. crash. He was not wearing a seatbelt, the report stated.

“It appears that black ice and poor road conditions were significant factors in this unfortunate incident,” said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast. “Please keep the family in your thoughts.”
“The driver appeared to have lost control of his vehicle due to the icy road conditions and speed,” states the report. “The vehicle was traveling north on US 31 when it spun out of control and exited the roadway into the median. The vehicle then overturned and the driver was ejected.”
US 31 was closed in the vicinity of the crash, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
