FRUITPORT – The Hart Pirates’ season opener on the road ended in a 0-7 loss to the Fruitport Trojans. The Pirates, who were “running a few players short,” according to coach Joseph Gilbert, had to call up a few junior varsity players to fill the spots in the roster.
Fruitport “took control after about 12 minutes of play,” according to Gilbert, and scored four goals in the first half. The Pirates made some changes at halftime, and got a “dangerous” counter-attack going, where they were able to generate some opportunities. However, Fruitport netted three more goals in the second half to end the contest in a shutout.
Hart’s starting goalie, who battled an ankle injury throughout the game, was replaced by Emma Hopkins, a first year player, who made an impressive 6 saves in her debut game.
The Pirates will host Suttons Bay for their home opener Wednesday at 5 p.m.
