WEARE TOWNSHIP — Do you have a desire to start a small-scale orchard in your backyard or have established trees and want to learn more about how to care for them?
Join a hands-on fruit tree pruning workshop at the West Central Michigan Research and Extension Center, at 5185 N. Oceana Dr. Saturday, March 21, from 1-3 p.m.
The program will be provided by MSU Extension fruit production experts and Oceana Conservation District staff to bring best practices in fruit tree care to the home orchard scale. Highlights of the workshop include site selection and early establishment choices for planting new trees and wildlife management strategies to protect your trees for the long run.
Pruning demonstrations will provide guidelines to set your trees up for success at planting; best practices for disease management and optimal fruit production; and renovation pruning for mature trees. Strategies for pruning apple, pear, cherry and peach trees of various ages and structures will be included in the program.
This field day is a cooperative effort by the Oceana Conservation District, Mason-Lake Conservation District and MSU Extension. Learn more and register at https://www.oceanaconservation.org/oceana-events/2026/fruittreepruning or call the Oceana Conservation District at 231-861-5600.
