Chapa
HART – Jesuz Chapa, 63, most recently residing in Dallas, Texas, was arraigned in Oceana County’s 79th District Court Tuesday, March 10, for allegedly sexually abusing a minor child repeatedly between 2000 and 2003, stated Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel in a press release.
“Chapa was recently extradited to Oceana County, from Texas, by the U.S. Marshals Service under Operation Survivor Justice,” states the press release. “Chapa is charged with five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, each a felony potentially punishable by a lifetime term of incarceration.
“Chapa is alleged to have repeatedly sexually assaulted a minor relative between the years 2000 and 2003, when the reported victim was between the ages of 8 and 10. The alleged assaults were first reported by the victim in 2007, and in 2008 the Oceana County Prosecuting Attorney charged Chapa with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. By this time, Chapa had relocated to Dallas. The case was referred to the Department of Attorney General under Operation Survivor Justice last year and, following additional investigation by Michigan State Police, Chapa was charged with four additional counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
“Operation Survivor Justice is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Attorney General, local county prosecutors, and the U.S. Marshals Service to locate, apprehend, and return to Michigan fugitive offenders with outstanding sexual assault warrants.”
“Survivors of sexual assault deserve to have their cases move forward, and I am grateful for our Operation Survivor Justice partners who help make it possible for us to continue pursuing justice,” said Attorney General Nessel. “We remain committed to locating and returning fugitive offenders to Michigan to face the charges against them in court.”
Chapa is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in district court for a probable cause conference March 24 and a preliminary examination March 31.
