SHELBY — Area high school students got a close-up look at career and education options available after graduation during the Oceana College Access Network’s College and Career Fair, Feb. 24, in the Shelby High School gym.
Approximately 350 students from Shelby, Hart, Walkerville and Montague attended this year’s career fair, said Oceana College Access Network Coordinator Alyssa Merten.
Over 85 booths were set up inside the gym, representing various local businesses, training centers, colleges and organizations for the 11th annual event.
The goal of the yearly event is to “spark students’ interest in different career pathways that they might want to pursue,” said Merten. “It gives them an opportunity to talk to people who work in the field now. It also connects them to educational institutions, so they can understand if there is education required for the career they’re interested in. They can talk to the folks from the different institutions, unions, training centers, colleges and community colleges.”
All the people who have booths at the college and career fair have lunch at the school prior to the event. “It’s a great way to get everybody together and share what we’re doing and why we’re doing it.”
Most of the students who attend the fair are high school juniors, but this year Shelby eighth graders also participated.
