SCOTTVILLE — Shelby defeated Hesperia Monday in the first round of Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 District 73 tournament. The Tigers won 79-28, eliminating the Panthers.

“It was exciting to see the energy from the whole team tonight,” said Shelby Coach Rick Zoulek. “It wasn’t always clean and sharp but the guys really got after it tonight.  We knew Hesperia would try to raise their level of play in the tournament.  Our guys were ready and responded well.  Practice has been much more intense and focused lately, which is great to be a part of.  We need the same energy against NM but we need to clean up the passing and defensive containment.  It’s great to be playing our best at this time of year.

“Andrew Arquette had a nice offensive game with 28 points and 5 assists,” Zoulek said.
Shelby’s Leighton Belasco had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists, and 2 blocks. Eli Kelley had 11 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Isaac Garcia had 7 points, 5 rebounds, 8 steals. Kamari Richmond had 8 points, and 3 steals.

Shelby will go up against North Muskegon in the semi-finals on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 5:30 p.m. at Mason County Central High School.
