NEW ERA — Community members are invited to enjoy a day of homemade pies and charitable support for local animals during the Southern Oceana County Cherry Pie Contest and Auction Saturday, Feb. 21.
This year’s event will take place at The Avenue, located at 4747 First St. The once long‑standing community tradition returns this year, and is raising essential funds for Oceana County Animal Control, with a portion of the proceeds from the pie auction helping provide care, shelter, and services for animals throughout the county.
“The cherry pie contest and auction is a big part of New Era’s history,” said Michele Cunningham, who has been involved in the event since 2012. “We have families with multiple generations who participate each year. It’s exciting to see families and our community come together for this great cause.”

There is no advance registration required to participate in the contest. Bakers may enter simply by bringing a homemade pie during the morning drop‑off period from 8-10 a.m. Judging begins at 9 a.m. Winners will be announced at 1 p.m., and the pie auction will also begin at 1 p.m.
To ensure fair and consistent judging, all pies must follow a few basic guidelines. Entries must be submitted in disposable pie tins, and each pie must include a top crust. Only one pie may be entered into the contest per person.
Trophies will be awarded to the top three entries in each of the following divisions: adult male, adult female, and youth — 12 and under. Winners receive cash prizes, recognition, trophies and well‑earned bragging rights.
The event is open to everyone, including those who do not plan to bake. Community members are encouraged to attend, bid on pies, cheer on participants, and enjoy the festivities.
“The cherry pie contest and auction is a fun community tradition that inspires lighthearted competition while also benefiting a good cause,” said Amy Weesies, who has been involved for several years.
