The Lakeshore Badgers played two games over the weekend, going up against the Capital City Caps in East Lansing on Friday and on home ice against the Kalamazoo Eagles on Saturday.
The Badgers fell to East Lansing 6-3 and defeated the Eagles 4-3.
EAST LANSING — The Badgers competed hard against a strong Capital City Caps team on Friday night. The first period saw several chances for the Caps turned away by the Badgers’ goaltender, Mason County Central sophomore Brockton Jabrocki. Lakeshore pressed hard and was able to keep those chances limited to less dangerous areas of the ice. The Caps broke the ice with the game’s first goal with 1 minute remaining in the first period.
The second period saw the Badgers get on the board early with a goal from MCC senior Levi Young just over 2 minutes into the frame. The Caps struck back about a minute later, regaining the lead. The Caps added to their lead with a second goal of the period 2 minutes later. The teams worked hard looking for space and trying to create more scoring chances in the period but were both held off the board until the intermission.
The Badgers came out in the third period with energy, pressing play and finding more scoring chances, getting two goals from Ludington High School junior Ryan Higley. Capital City opened the scoring in the third period ahead of the Badger goals. With 4 minutes to play in the game, the score was 4-3 in the Caps favor, with the Badgers pressing hard for the equalizer. The Badgers couldn’t find it, and the Caps got 2 goals in the game’s last 90 seconds to complete their 6-3 win.
“We played hard and competed with a stronger team on Friday night,” Lakeshore Coach Brian Zatloukal said. “We were happy with the play of our team. We couldn’t quite get level and our scoring chances were limited in this game with shots being 43-21 in favor of the Caps.” Brockton Jabrocki took the loss in goal and was named player of the game by his teammates.
VICTORY TOWNSHIP, Mason County — “We were happy to return to home ice for a contest against the Kalamazoo Eagles after a stretch of five road games where we went 1-4,” Zatloukal said.
The Badgers had unfinished business with the Eagles from December when they last played. In the December game, the Badgers got a goal late in regulation to tie the game and won in overtime. The Badgers were anxious to come out hard and not leave the game to chance in an extra session.
The Eagles struck first with a short-handed goal 7 minutes into the first period. The Badgers responded with tight checking and strong defensive play to put the Eagles on their heels, scoring the equalizer with 3 minutes to play in the first period on a goal from MCC junior Cyric Jabrocki.
The second period was tight checking and limited scoring opportunities. The Badgers scored the go ahead goal with 3 minutes remaining in the period off the stick of LHS sophomore Adrian Lundberg. The Eagles didn’t back down and got two goals in the last minute and a half to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.
After regrouping in the second intermission, the Badgers came out with a plan of strong defensive hockey to limit the Eagles chances and build momentum. The Badgers tied the game with 10 minutes remaining on a goal from MCC senior Levi Young. The goal gave the Badgers life, with the team building momentum and finding more scoring chances. With five and a half minutes remaining, LHS junior Ryan Higley scored the eventual game winner, giving the Badgers the lead 4-3. The Badgers were able to limit the Eagles scoring chances over the final 4 minutes and got timely saves from MCC sophomore netminder Brockton Jabrocki en route to the 4-3 win. The team voted MCC junior Cyric Jabrocki the player of the game.
“The coaching staff was proud of the resilience of the team on Saturday night,” Zatloukal said. “They were focused and competed hard, not allowing the Eagles much time and space to make plays.”
The Badgers have two games remaining in the regular season, both at home. Wednesday, February 11 the Badgers host the Panthers of Holland West Ottawa at 7 p.m. On Saturday, February 14 they host the Livonia Red Stallions.
The Lakeshore Badgers is a cooperative team hosted by Manistee Area Public Schools and consisting of high school players from MAPS, Ludington, Mason County Central, Mason County Eastern, Pentwater, Shelby and Hart. The team’s home is West Shore Community Ice Arena on the campus of West Shore Community College.
