FRUITPORT — The Lakeshore Badgers fell to the Grand Haven Buccaneers Wednesday evening 3-1.
The contest was tight with the Badgers taking on a “bend, don’t break” stance being outshot 34-14 on the night. The teams completed the first period scoreless with a few chances for each side.
The second period saw Grand Haven strike first with a goal just over two minutes into the period. Grand Haven added a second goal about seven minutes later, with the Badgers responding four minutes later with a goal of their own. Grand Haven tallied the final goal of the game in the last minute of the period, extending its lead to 3-1. The third period was closely contested but neither team was able to score in the frame.
The Badgers goal for the game was from Mason County Central junior Cyric Jabrocki with the assist to Ludington High School junior Ryan Higley. MCC sophomore Brockton Jabrocki took the loss in net stopping 31 of the 34 shots he faced. MCC senior Levi Young was named player of the game for his team first effort blocking several shots and being a fierce penalty killer.
The Badgers were unsuccessful on their five power plays, but successfully killed off all five of their penalties, including a five-minute major.
“We were able to keep the game close on the scoreboard but we felt that Grand Haven carried play for much of the game,” said Lakeshore Coach Brian Zatloukal. “We had good discipline in our penalty killing effort tonight which was our bright spot in this game. We have work to do as a team to compete more effectively against stronger teams on our schedule.”
The Badgers won’t have to wait long to return to action, with their next game on Friday night in Gladwin, followed by a game Saturday night traveling to the Upper Peninsula to play against Manistique. The loss to Grand Haven brings the Badgers record on the season to 12-9.
The Lakeshore Badgers is a cooperative team hosted by Manistee Area Public Schools and consisting of high school players from MAPS, Ludington, Mason County Central, Mason County Eastern, Pentwater, Shelby and Hart.
