HART TOWNSHIP — A house in the 2700 block of N. 64th Avenue was destroyed by fire Monday morning, Jan. 26.

“It’s a total loss,” said Michigan State Police Sgt. Michael Cuevas who responded to the scene.

Firefighters from Hart, Shelby-Benona and Pentwater were dispatched to the scene in the frigid cold at 9:20 a.m., and Walkerville and Ferry Township departments were called to assist but were later instructed to respond “non-code.” The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the two adults who lived the home, said Sgt. Cuevas. Two cats died from smoke inhalation, he said.

“It appears it started above the furnace in the northwest corner of the residence. When I arrived on scene, along with the Hart fire chief (Dwight Fuehring), the structure was engulfed in smoke, and then flames started appearing shortly after. There is no suspicion of foul play at this time, and there were no injuries sustained in the fire except their two cats inside perished from the smoke.”

The Oceana County Victim Services Unit was also called to the scene to assist the occupants of the home.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 11 a.m.
