HART — Seasonal weight and speed restrictions for commercial trucks on county roads that went into effect Jan. 8 due to unseasonably warm weather are now being lifted Monday, Jan. 19, due to cold weather’s return.
The Oceana County Road Commission announced that seasonal weight and speed restrictions will be lifted Jan. 19 at 6 a.m. until further notice.
In an effort to prevent potholes, the road commission imposes seasonal weight and speed restrictions on county roads every year. Last week’s restrictions were imposed at an earlier time frame compared most years when restrictions were imposed in February or March.
The weather was “behaving like spring” last week, said Oceana County Road Commission Managing Director Mark Timmer, who anticipated the restrictions would be lifted when the weather got cold again. Restrictions are expected to be imposed again in late winter/early spring for a “two-part season,” said Timmer.
“If we don’t restrict the roads, we’re going to have a lot of road damage.”
