HART — The Hart Pirates fell just short in a thrilling home battle against Fremont, losing 64-61 in a game that showcased incredible heart and determination. Despite the narrow defeat, the team’s record remains strong at 6-1, demonstrating its resilience throughout what proved to be one of their most competitive contests of the season. Numerous missed opportunities especially at the free throw line (6-18) 33% proved to be too costly against a very solid Fremont basketball team!
The game began with Hart Varsity firing on all cylinders, jumping out to an early 18-11 lead after the first quarter behind balanced scoring from multiple players. Kolton Rockwell got things started with an opening three-pointer, while Caleb Ackley and Jagger Lenon contributed key baskets to help build the advantage. However, Fremont responded with momentum-shifting runs, including an 11-point surge late in the second quarter that gave them a 28-26 halftime lead. The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets, with Luke VanderWilk providing crucial scoring to keep Hart within striking distance.
The fourth quarter delivered pure drama as the lead changed hands multiple times. Jagger Lenon emerged as the hero with back-to-back three-pointers that momentarily gave Hart a 54-53 advantage, capping off his outstanding 15-point performance on an efficient 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Caleb Ackley fought hard in the paint all game long, finishing with another double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds on 7-of-15 shooting, while Kolton Rockwell matched that total despite a tough shooting night, showing great perseverance by contributing 14 points.
“Luke VanderWilk was remarkably efficient with 10 points on 4-of-5 field goal shooting, and Miquel Escamilla provided amazing defense and had many valuable contributions including 6 points including a clutch third-quarter three-pointer,” said Hart Coach Nick Bronsema.
“Though the final seconds didn’t fall our way, this team showed tremendous character in a game that could have easily gone either direction.”
Hart will pick up play again after the new year in a key conference game against Ravenna january 8.
