December 10, 2025

EGELSTON TOWNSHIP (Muskegon County) — The 9-year-old girl who died in a car vs. semi tanker truck crash Wednesday morning, Dec. 10, on Maple Island Road north of Sullivan Road was a third grader at Hesperia Community Schools, and the 51-year-old woman who died in the crash was the child’s mother.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the loss of one of our students,” writes Hesperia Superintendent Bryan Mey in a press release. ”Today a third grade student and a parent lost their lives in a tragic traffic accident.

“Our sincerest thoughts and prayers are with the family at this unimaginably difficult time. We ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers as well.

“Our community is strong and so incredibly supportive. We want to ensure that every student, parent, guardian and staff member has the support they need. Hesperia Community Schools has initiated our crisis response team and mobilized our community partners. We have supportive measures in place and counseling available. We encourage anyone who may need them to utilize these resources.

“At this difficult time, we ask that families talk with your student at home to help them prepare for the emotions they may experience. Having an open conversation about what happened can help process grief and confusion.”

“It was determined that a car traveling north on North Maple Island Road lost control and crossed the centerline,” states a press release from the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office. “The car collided with a southbound semi tanker truck hauling propane. The car became pinned between the truck and a guardrail. The car was occupied by a 51-year-old female driver and a 9-year-old female passenger. Both the driver and the passenger of the car were pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was uninjured.”

The area hit was with heavy snow overnight, making roads treacherous.
