OCEANA COUNTY — An army of volunteers, the Oceana County Goodfellows/Old News Boys/Old Newsies, braved the cold and snowy weather Saturday, Dec. 6, to make sure that no child is forgotten this Christmas season.

The dedicated volunteers stood at major intersections throughout Oceana County and Montague to collect donations from passing motorists, displaying the organization’s motto: “Let No Child Be Forgotten.”

“For more than 80 years, the Oceana County Goodfellows/Old Newsies have been providing Christmas gifts for underprivileged kids in Oceana County,” states the charitable organization’s president Alex Katt in the one-page newspaper that lists hundreds of newsies’ names and their decades of service. The paper is “delivered” to the generous motorists for their donations.

“All children age 15 and under in Oceana County and Montague are eligible to receive gifts,” states Katt. “Each child will receive a gift, hat, gloves, socks, toothbrush and toothpaste. The younger children will receive coloring books and crayons, and each family will be receiving a $50 gift card to their local grocery store as well as a family game.

“Christmas is about doing a little extra and making a difference in the lives of children, and we couldn’t do this without you. With the help of our members and community contributions, over 300 families and 800 children were blessed with the Christmas spirit last year.

“It was almost 20 years ago that I was pulled into this organization and taught that the manner of giving is worth more than the gift itself,” said Katt. “Serving under the infamous Bill House has been an honor and pleasure and we want to continue our tradition of giving.

“We are always looking for new members and help. Don’t hesitate to reach out on our Facebook page for more information.

“You can be sure that all contributions are used exclusively for Oceana County and Montague children and will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration. Your support means the world.”

The organization’s address is: PO Box 100, Shelby, MI 49445
