OCEANA COUNTY — The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a winter storm warning for Oceana, Mason, Newaygo and Mecosta counties beginning Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 7 a.m. until Thursday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m.
Heavy snow is expected with total accumulations between 2 and 7 inches and winds gusting at 45-55 mph.
“Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow,” states NWS. “Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Visibility and road conditions may change rapidly over short distances in lake effect snow.
“Persons should consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you in case you become stranded.
“During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility and road conditions.”
A high wind warning is also in effect for Oceana, Mason, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.
West winds gusting 50-60 mph are expected. Winds will be strongest Wednesday afternoon and evening. “Damaging winds will blow down some trees and power lines. Power outages are likely. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”
