Michigan State Police urges motorists to slow down
By Allison Scarbrough, News Editor
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A 65-year-old Mears man was transported to an area hospital for treatment of “non-life-threatening” injuries after the passenger vehicle he was driving collided with a semi truck on southbound US 31 near Shelby Road Monday morning, Nov. 10, according to Michigan State Police Sgt. Michael Cuevas of the Hart post.
The accident involved “a semi truck belonging to Indian Summer and a southbound passenger vehicle driven by a 65-year-old Mears man,” said Sgt. Cuevas. The Mears man’s vehicle “proceeded to go from the right lane into the left, overtaking the semi truck. The Indian Summer truck was in the left hand lane due to the amount of people using the off-ramps with the road conditions. The Mears man then went into the left lane, merging over in front of the semi, and not allowing the semi truck driver enough time to apply the brakes. He ended up getting rear ended; ran off the roadway to the left and into the median; and overturned.”
The Mears man was transported to Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital by Life EMS, and the semi driver was not injured. The semi truck sustained minor damage. “The semi truck was able to pull over safely onto the shoulder of the roadway,” he said.
The highway in the vicinity of the crash was closed down briefly, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
“Drugs and alcohol are definitely not a factor. The road conditions are just so bad. MSP is encouraging everyone to slow down.”
Oceana County remains under a winter storm warning until 4 a.m. Tuesday. Total snow accumulations of up to 9 inches were expected with the early winter storm.
