FERRY TOWNSHIP — Some young chickens died in a chicken coop fire at 4213 S. 132nd Avenue Monday afternoon, Oct. 27, said Capt. Chris Ernst of the Ferry Township Fire Department.

The chicken coop and attached workshop are a total loss, said Capt. Ernst. “It was more of a chicken coop/workshop,” he said. An approximate 15-20 foot workshop had been added to the chicken coop structure.

Firefighters from Ferry Township, Shelby-Benona and Grant Township were dispatched to the scene around 1 p.m. and remained on scene for about two hours.

“They had some small little chicks that they had in that area that died. The bigger chickens were in a pen in the yard in a separate area, so they were fine.”

It was challenging for firefighters to navigate around miscellaneous piles of supplies on the grounds, which

also caused the fire to spread.

It was not immediately known if the owners’ had insurance.

“The homeowner said his wife happened to look out the window and saw that it was on fire.” The cause of the fire is likely electrical, he said, possible due to an electrical cord that was being used for power. “We are thinking the electrical cord got overloaded.”

The owners’ home located about 100 feet away did not sustain any damages.
